Have a Game Plan

Don’t just expect to throw a bunch of food, booze and utensils in the back of your truck and expect it will all work itself out and turn out great. That kind of haphazard approach only works with marriage proposals and the birth of your first child. As you should well know.

You need to check the venue’s website or give them a call to understand their policies on alcohol, types of food carriers, glass container and so on. Getting thrown out of the parking for venue violations isn’t going to win you the tailgate party of the year award.

Also, don’t forget napkins, wet wipes, water and trash bags for cleanup. Your best bet is to make a comprehensive list of what you will need.

Choose an Epic Menu

Your party will be anything but epic if you serve basic food. If your party guests want a boring, bland burger or ribs drawing in tasteless goo, they can go to Applebee’s for that. Offer people something they don’t see on the menu at Chili’s.

The food you serve at your epic tailgating party from the back of your pickup truck should have people talking about it for weeks. It should be food that makes you drool even when just reading about it.

Kick Out the Jams

Tunes are a critical part of any party, including your tailgating party. You will never reach epic status for your tailgating party by blasting country western music, just so you know. You won't win over the crowd by playing all hip-hop music or rock and roll even.

Keep in mind that you need to win over a diverse group of people who have varied tastes in music. And while a small group of people at your party will have an appreciation for Toto, Journey and Styx, not everybody wants to hear Mr. Roboto, Africa and Babe more than once.

A mix of current jams and varies genres from the past is perfect for setting the mood and keeping your fellow party-goers happy. Just remember to avoid Nickelback and death metal at all costs. Nobody likes Nickelback.

Entertainment

You can't expect to label your tailgating party epic if everybody is just standing around, you have to have something for them to do. This could be as simple as having a few footballs handy to toss around or setting up games like cornhole or Frisbee tic tac toe.

Decor

You don’t have to drop several hundred dollars on decorations, but you still need to display your team colors loud and proud. The best way to set the mood is with a tablecloth, napkins and paper plates in team colors. Face painting is an option.

Seating

A tailgating [party can go on for hours and nobody wants to stand in the parking lot for that amount of time. Seating is essential for an epic tailgating party so you need to provide fold-out chairs or other options for seating. If you have connections, bring along a few bales of hay. These will give people a place to sit and add to that fall feeling.

Watch the Weather

Fall brings unpredictable weather. It might be hot and dry one day and rainy and cold the next. Your job is to ensure your party guests will be comfortable no matter what the weather conditions are. Have a few umbrellas handy in case it rains and a canopy over your truck to protect from the hot sun.
