Listen up, gentlemen.

Now that I have your attention, allow me to explain something very important, your marriage or relationship with your girlfriend depends on it.

You are a pretty lucky guy, only because your girlfriend or wife puts up with your shenanigans. It’s almost like she really likes you or something. She doesn’t say a word when you buy truck wheels instead of a new washing machine and she even bought you a great set of Nitto Ridge Grappler tires for Christmas and you absolutely loved them. Only it’s a shame that all you got her was a necklace from Kmart, and that was found in the clearance section.

What I am trying to say here is that if you continue failing as a boyfriend or husband, you will soon be sleeping in your truck, the very same truck sporting those awesome Nitto Grappler tires. So I suggest you do something very special for your lady. And by special, I don't mean spot her dinner at Applebee’s. You need to take your lady on a picnic and you need to do it right.

Tossing a couple sandwiches and a few beers in a cooler and driving to the park is not the proper way to picnic. Pay attention and read the rest of this article carefully, take notes if you have to, and discover the right way to go on a picnic.

Now, modern technology has made communication all too easy. When you want to convey a message to your sweetie, she is just a text away. But know right now that this method of communication is literally killing your relationship. I mean, just how many “honey, can you grab me a beer?” texts a day can your lady take?

So, when you plan this picnic, plan on spending a lot of time communicating with her verbally, face to face. I know it sounds like a burden, but it is something you did before you owned a cell phone. But you need to start practicing right now to master all the nuances, like making eye contact and acting interested in what she has to say.

The self-doubt is settling in, and you are starting to sweat.

Sometimes you just have to man up and do the right thing. So you need to plan this picnic with care and be thoughtful. Take a deep breath and let’s go get em.

Make a List

There are several essentials you will need for the perfect picnic, make a list so you don’t forget. Remember what happened when you failed to make a list of people you need to buy gifts for Christmas? You wound up forgetting gifts for two of your kids. Find a Good Location

Forget the local park, there are far better places to go on a picnic. And since you do have a truck with 4-wheel drive, the top of a mountain is a picnic destination option.

If you have a favorite place to go fishing, that would probably make a good spot for a picnic. Another good picnic location would be off the path you go 4-wheeling. Basically, find a place that is in nature, has grass and is somewhat isolated as you won’t want a bunch of people around.

Food

If you struggle to slap two slices of bread over ham or turkey, there is no shame in buying pre-made sandwiches for your picnic or buying sandwiches from, say, Panera Bread. Don’t forget the dessert, a nice cake or pie will suffice.

Drink

Leave the beer at home. Bring a bottle of wine on your picnic; nothing fancy, but it should cost at least 10 bucks a bottle. Make sure you pack wine glasses and an opener. She will be impressed when you pull out a bottle of wine instead of a beer.

If you don’t drink alcohol, iced tea, Italian soda or juice are perfectly acceptable beverages.

Other Considerations

If at all possible, plan your picnic on a day when you know the weather will cooperate. This means checking weather forecasts and avoiding planning a picnic during the rainy season.

Casual dress for a picnic if fine, but at least make sure you are wearing shorts or jeans that have the fewest holes in them. Try to make an effort to look as good as possible. You can bet your girlfriend or wife will be looking great for you.

Lastly, take the time and make the effort to talk with your lady in a way that is truthful and sincere. It might be somewhat of a shock, but she does value what you have to say.

It is also just as important to listen to what she has to say. At the end of the day, you will both be glad you took the time to plan a picnic.
